Chad Mendes may not have brought home another UFC championship to Team Alpha Male last month, but according to his teammate Lance Palmer, the squad was extremely proud of what took place.

Although Mendes was handed a decision loss by champion Jose Aldo at UFC 179, the powerful wrestler pushed the renowned fighter to his limits, in what was one of the promotion’s best title fights ever.

“I mean, for everyone, I think we were all excited that he put that much of a beating on Aldo,” Palmer said on a recent episode of Full Contact Fighter Radio, while discussing the thrilling fight. “If you look at Chad and you look at Aldo, post fight, you would think that Chad won the fight. Aldo’s face was so beat up and he was so damaged.”

Both men landed numerous, punishing blows during their war, and although Aldo was dropped early on, the consensus was that he did enough to defend the title. All three judges scored the bout 49-46 for the Nova Uniao fighter.

“But when you look and actually watch the fight, Chad did lose, I think it could have been 48-47 on the cards, but in Brazil they’re not going to give you anything,” Palmer added about the fight, which went down in Rio de Janeiro. “Definitely against the champ, you have to go out there and dominantly put on a show against him…”

Although the defeat was a setback for Mendes and Team Alpha Male, it did come during a year when TJ Dillashaw added the UFC’s bantamweight title to the gym’s list of accomplishments. In May, Dillashaw stopped Aldo’s teammate, Renan Barao, to become the promotion’s 135 pound champ.

“The morale in the gym is good,” Palmer furthered. “He (Mendes) put on a great show. He put on the best fight against Jose Aldo; he dropped Jose Aldo numerous times, and they were in a war. He got hit twice; two knockout blows after the bell in the first round, and he came back and recovered, went after Aldo in the second, third, fourth and fifth rounds. You can’t ask for a much better performance than that.”

On December 13th, Palmer will attempt to bring the WSOF featherweight title back to the Team Alpha Male gym, when he takes on current champ, Rick Glenn. The bout will be part of WSOF 16, which will be hosted by the McClellan Conference Center in Sacramento, California.
