Report: Alexander Gustafsson Says Jon Jones’ UFC 172 Win Didn’t Feature Anything “Spectacular”

Following UFC 172, the consensus opinion seems to be that Jon Jones’ decision win over Glover Teixeira, marked one of the light-heavyweight champ’s finest performances to date. It appears as though number one contender Alexander Gustafsson, however, doesn’t share that view.

On Saturday night, Jones used a wide array of striking techniques from the outside and in the clinch to pick apart Teixeira. While Teixeira managed to land several telling shots, it was far from the competitive bout that many people expected.

Well, in a follow-up appearance on “The MMA Hour”, here is some of what Gustafsson had to say about the champion’s performance (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“He was dominating Glover from the beginning, no doubt about it,” Gustafsson said. “But, I don’t know it seemed like he didn’t perform like he used to do. I thought that, I don’t know, he did enough to win the fight basically.”

“We used to see spectacular things with Jon Jones when he fights. He mixed things up and he did it in this fight too. But he didn’t do it like he used to do in his previous fights.”

In March, Gustafsson stopped Jimi Manuwa to lock up another bout with Jones, who defeated him by UD in September. The date and location for the rematch has yet to be determined.
