Report: Anders Silva’s Manager Says Fighter Won’t Make 2016 Olympic Bid

Anderson Silva

By FCF Staff

Anderson Silva made headlines not long ago when he announced he hoped to compete for the Brazilian Taekwondo team at the 2016 Olympics, but it sounds like the legend won’t be trying out after all.

The 40 year-old fighter is expected to appear in front of the Nevada Commission in August, after testing positive for several banned substances earlier this year. Recently Silva’s manager, Jorge Guimaraes, spoke to the Brazilian outlet Portal do Vale Tudo, and while doing so, relayed this (translation via MMA Fighting.com):

“This Olympic thing has been discarded. Anderson won’t participate in the Olympics,” Guimaraes said. “He’s now waiting for the Athletic Commission’s verdict, which should come soon. We are waiting, we’ll see if there’s going to be a punishment and how long it will be. He’s training, Anderson never stops training. He’s staying active.”

Silva is currently under temporary suspension, and depending on what type of disciplinary action the former middleweight champ receives, he could be eligible to fight again in early 2016.

“The Spider” returned to the Octagon in January and worked his way to a decision win over Nick Diaz, but that result will likely be overturned. Since Silva’s test results were disclosed the star has repeatedly stated he never knowingly used PEDs.
