Report: Cheick Kongo Not Expected to Return to UFC

Kongo

By FCF Staff

After an 18 fight and near seven year long run in the UFC, Cheick Kongo’s next bout will likely not take place in the Octagon. The French heavyweight was KO’d by Roy Nelson in the first round at UFC 159 this past weekend, and it appears as though the UFC has elected to cut ties for now.

According to a report from MMA Fighting.com, Kongo (18-8-2) has completed his current contract with the UFC, and an official from the promotion has relayed the vet will not be re-signed. The fighter’s profile at UFC.com has also been removed.

Kongo went 11-6-1 during his time with the UFC, which began in 2006, when he stopped Gilbert Aldana. Since then the 37 year-old heavyweight has scored notable wins over Mirko “Cro Cop”, Matt Mitrione and Pat Barry, with additional losses coming to Mark Hunt, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Heath Herring and Carmelo Marrero.
