Report: Colby Covington – Robbie Lawler Fight Nearly Set

For some time, Colby Covington has been calling for a title fight with UFC welterweight champ Kamaru Usman, and the expectation was that “Chaos” would get his wish. But, now it’s being reported that a fight between Covington and Robbie Lawler is close to being signed.

After Usman won the welterweight title in March by defeating Tyron Woodley, it was reported that Covington would be next for a title shot. ESPN is reporting, however, that Covington and Lawler have agreed to fight at the UFC’s August 3rd card in Newark. The fight is not yet finalized, but that’s expected to happen shortly.

Covington is quoted saying in the story: “UFC needed a main event on short notice, so I agreed to defend my title in my first defense against the last real champion this division has had.”

Usman is currently sidelined with injuries and is not expected to fight until the end of the year.

Covington (14-1), meanwhile, hasn’t competed since last June when he won the interim belt by defeating Rafael dos Anjos via decision. “Chaos” was eventually stripped of the belt when he could not commit to fighting Woodley last September due to pending, nasal surgery.

The former champ Lawler (28-13) lost via technical submission to Ben Askren in March. “Ruthless”, however, claims he never tapped our went out as a result of the choke that Askren was applying.
