When Alistair Overeem returns to the Octagon early next year, it appears as though the decorated fighter will do so with a championship on the line. Despite having spent all of 2012 on the sidelines, Overeem will likely fight the winner of the upcoming December 29th bout between UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos and former champion Cain Velasquez.

According to multiple reports, UFC President Dana White made the revelation after this weekend’s UFC 153 event.

Overeem was scheduled to fight dos Santos in May, however, the feared striker tested positive for testosterone-to-epitestosterone levels and was denied a license by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The fighter can reapply to compete at the end of December.

The 32 year-old fighter’s (36-11) only appearance thus far in the UFC took place last December, when Overeem promptly stopped former champion Brock Lesnar. The win was the former Strikeforce and DREAM champion’s eighth straight.

Velasquez (10-1) worked his way into a rematch with dos Santos—after being stopped by the Brazilian fighter last November—by storming through Antonio Silva at UFC 146 in May.

The December 29th, UFC 155 card is expected to be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
