Jake Shields has been looking to face another top ten welterweight for some time now, and it appears as though the former Strikeforce champ will get his wish in the coming months. According to a report, the UFC is looking to book a bout between Shields and the #4 ranked Maia, and both men have verbally agreed to the fight.

Word of the match-up was reported during the latest edition of FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” Tuesday. When and where the fight will take place has yet to be determined.

Maia (18-4) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jon Fitch in February, which was his third consecutive win since he dropped down from middleweight. The renowned jiu-jitsu competitor was scheduled to fight Josh Koscheck at this Saturday’s UFC 163, however, Koscheck withdrew due to injury.

Shields (20-6-1) scored a split decision win over Tyron Woodly at UFC 161 in his last outing, after he had his win over Ed Herman last August overturned, due to failing a post-fight drug test.

The feared grappler has gone undefeated in three bouts since he was stopped by Jake Ellenberger in September, 2011.
