Any talk of a possible bout between Gunnar Nelson and Demian Maia in the coming months has been silenced, as the latter is apparently sidelined with a staph infection.

Maia is coming off a dominant, submission win over Neil Magny at UFC 190, which was the jiu-jitsu titan’s third straight victory. Nelson has expressed an interest in fighting Maia in the past, and there was speculation as to whether the UFC might book the match-up for October 24th.

In the latest edition of “UFC Tonight“, however, it was reported that Maia has a staph infection in his thigh, and won’t be competing for a while.

Nelson, meanwhile, is coming off a first round submission win over Brandon Thatch in July. The Icelandic fighter trains out of the SBG Gym in Dublin, Ireland, which is where the October 24th, UFC Fight Night 76 card will take place.
