After losing by decision for a second time against UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson earlier this month, former champ Frankie Edgar has reportedly decided to drop down to the featherweight division.

Edgar will make the move to 145 pounds and is hoping to compete at that weight before the year is out, according to a report from the UFC Tonight program and MMA Fighting.

For some time now, debate has continued as to whether the 5’6 tall Edgar would be better suited for the featherweight division. The 30 year-old-veteran has consistently dismissed the notion, however, and following his back-to-back wins over Gray Maynard, discussions whether he should move to featherweight had diminished.

Since arriving in the UFC in 2007, the only two men to defeat Edgar in 13 bouts were the aforementioned Maynard and Henderson.

During his run in the lightweight division, the accomplished wrestler and noted pugilist scored wins over former champions Sean Sherk and BJ Penn, as well as established vets like Mark Bocek, Spencer Fisher and Tyson Griffin.

Although both of Edgar’s losses to Henderson were tightly contested and controversial decisions, the UFC has announced that Nate Diaz would challenge for the lightweight title next.
