Report: Georges St. Pierre Says He’ll Fight Anderson Silva “When the Time is Right”

By FCF Staff

Heading into UFC 154, much of the focus remained on the possibility of a “superfight” between Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva materializing after the event, rather than on the main event between GSP and Carlos Condit. The pre-fight narrative didn’t seem to sit well with St. Pierre before the fight, and now several days removed from his unanimous decision win, the welterweight champion isn’t rushing to sign off on the all star bout.

In a recent appearance on Radio-Canada’s “Tout Le Monde en Parle” (“Everyone is Talking”) television program, St. Pierre reportedly relayed that he is interested in fighting Silva, but that the bout will have to take place when he’s set to leave the welterweight division. After stating that Silva is 234 pounds and that he is 188, St. Pierre added (translation via MMA Fighting):

“I just came back from an injury, there’s money to be made, there are fights in my weight class, other challenges out there, and if I fight him, I will have to gain weight, while he will have to lose weight, and then afterwards, I won’t be able to come back to my weight class.”

In addition, St. Pierre reportedly also cited that there are “things to do at 170 pounds” and that he doesn’t fight for money, but rather his own legacy. The decorated fighter apparently furthered that  “I want the fight, but I want to take it when I decide the time is right, not when he wants the fight to happen.”

St. Pierre’s comments seem to be in keeping with the position the fighter has held regarding the proposed “super fight” in the past, in that, he will have to put on weight before the bout can take place. Although UFC President Dana White and Silva’s camp have discussed the possibility of doing a catchweight bout–at around 180 pounds–it appears St. Pierre believes bulking up is a necessity before it can happen.

Of course, while the middleweight division doesn’t appear to have an imminent challenger for Silva at this juncture, Johny Hendricks has emerged as a number one contender for St. Pierre to face. In addition, St. Pierre has previously expressed a strong interest in fighting Nick Diaz, which likely would be a significant draw for the UFC if it were to take place.
