As welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre continues to prepare for his next title defence versus Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 next month, a stir was recently created after it was reported that the champ might be looking towards retirement. Now, St. Pierre’s accomplished coach, Firas Zahabi, is saying that the comments that prompted the speculation were taken out of context.

Zahabi recently gave an interview to a French Canadian outlet, where he reportedly relayed that St. Pierre would retire if he’s no longer fully motivated to train following his November 16th fight with Hendricks. The comments prompted speculation and spin that perhaps St. Pierre is thinking of calling it quits. In the latest edition of “UFC Tonight”, however, Zahabi relayed the following to the show’s reporter, Ariel Helwani.

“I spoke to Firas Zahabi and he said the remarks were taken out of context. A lot of people thought he might retire after the fight with Johny Hendricks. But that’s not what he said. He said that if GSP loses his drive through a training camp, then he’ll retire. But he says it’s been a great camp, best in two years. He’s not thinking about retirement and has lots of fights left.”

St. Pierre hasn’t fought since March when he worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Nick Diaz. Hendricks also fought at UFC 158 and locked up a title shot by handing Carlos Condit a UD defeat.

UFC 167 will take place on November 16th and will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
