Report: Josh Thomson Would be Happy to “Welcome” Jose Aldo to Lightweight, Says News of Pettis-Melendez Sickened Him

The MMA world is still buzzing from the news that Gilbert Melendez is not Bellator bound after all, but  instead, the lightweight contender has resigned with the UFC and will fight champ Anthony Pettis later this year. For the man who was supposed to challenge Pettis in December, Josh Thomson, the news evidently didn’t go over so well.

Thomson was originally scheduled to fight Pettis at UFC on FOX 9 in December, however, the latter injured his knee and Thomson fought Benson Henderson in January. Thomson recently appeared on MMA Junkie.com Radio, and when asked for his reaction regarding Pettis-Melendez, the veteran stated ” “It made me kind of sick to my stomach.”

Following “The Punk’s” tightly contested, split decision loss to Henderson in January, a frustrated Thomson relayed that his retirement could be pending. The 35 year-old has apparently changed his mind, however, and added in the interview: “Hopefully, there’s a chance to welcome Jose Aldo to the lightweight division.”

Aldo has expressed an interest in moving up to lightweight and fighting Pettis, but now that the latter is coaching TUF 20 and won’t fight Melendez until the end of the year, it remains to be seen what the featherweight champ’s next move is.

Thomson (20-6) has gone 1-1 since returning to the UFC last year. In April, the former Strikeforce champ stopped Nate Diaz in the second round.
