Report: Luke Rockhold Interested in Fighting Vitor Belfort
By FCF Staff
Although Vitor Belfort said he’s interested in rematching Jon Jones, following his impressive stoppage win over Michael Bisping at UFC on FX 7 Saturday night, Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold is apparently hoping to fight the vet next.
Rockhold (10-1) is waiting to hear who he will fight in his upcoming Octagon debut, and the highly regarded fighter reportedly told MMA Junkie that a fight with Belfort at UFC on FOX 7 in April “makes a lot of sense.”
Rockhold cited the fact that noted middleweight contender Chris Weidman is out until this summer, due to a surgically repaired shoulder, and that there aren’t a lot of other bouts available to him right now.
Top contenders Yushin Okami and Hector Lombard are scheduled to fight in March, and Tim Boetsch is coming off a loss to Costa Philippou, who Rockhold has also expressed an interest in fighting.
Belfort called out the light-heavyweight champ Jones after his memorable win this weekend, and in while doing so, referred to the next man who will fight Jones, Chael Sonnen, as a “clown.”
Jones submitted Belfort in the fourth round at UFC 152 in September. Belfort returned to the light-heavyweight division on short notice to face Jones, after UFC 151 was cancelled as a result of Dan Henderson being injured.
The UFC on FOX 7 card is set to take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
