Many fans want to see Robbie Lawler defend the UFC welterweight title against Johny Hendricks next, and the newly crowned champ also believes completing the trilogy is a good idea.

Lawler worked his way to a tightly contested, split decision victory over Hendricks at UFC 181, and in doing so, avenged the decision loss he incurred against the former champ this past March. Since both fights were so competitive and memorable, many believe the UFC should book the rubber match next, despite the fact Rory MacDonald was promised a title shot not long ago.

While speaking to Sherdog.com’s “Beatdown” program following his win, here is some of what Lawler had to say about fighting Hendricks for a third time:

“I’m very confident in my skills and think, if we fought again, I would win,” Lawler said. “Johny is a hell of a fighter, a hell of a competitor, and I look forward to meeting him again. Now that we have each won one apiece — and they were close fights — I think we need to figure this one out.”

Lawler also relayed that he’d like to take a little break, following a four fight campaign, and is hoping to defend the title in May, June, or July.

With the victory, the 32 year-old Lawler extended his pro record to 25-10, and the welterweight has gone 6-1 now since returning to the UFC last year.
