The mixed-martial-arts world has been rocked by reports today that a fighter in South Dakota has passed away following his participation in an unregulated event on May 18th, and that a Sacramento man has been critically injured while training on May 14th.

According to a report from the Rapid City Journal, Dustin Jenson has died one week after he was submitted via triangle-choke at a RingWars event, which was the fighter’s fifth amateur bout in the last year.

Jenson reportedly appeared to be okay after the submission loss, but eventually collapsed from a seizure while still attending the event and was later medically induced into a coma due to swelling in his brain.

The 26 year-old-fighter reportedly passed away on May 24th.

South Dakota currently does not have a regulatory body or commission in place to oversee MMA bouts in the state.

An online fund has been set up to assist Jenson’s family with the medical and funeral expenses.

And according to a report from News10.net, aspiring Sacramento fighter Devin Johnson has been critically injured while training at the city’s Ultimate Fitness facility, and has suffered a dislocated spine.

The injury reportedly occurred while Johnson attempted a takedown in an effort to escape a guillotine choke.

While Johnson was apparently paralyzed when he arrived at the hospital, the 22 year-old man has shown some signs of progress and now has some feeling in his right arm.

Former WEC champion Urijah Faber, who is part owner of the Ultimate Fitness gym, was apparently not at the facility when the injury occurred.

An online fund to assist Johnson with his medical expenses has also been set up.
