Former Strikeforce middleweight champ Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has reportedly agreed to fight accomplished wrestler and prospect Derek Brunson at the promotion’s upcoming August 18th event in San Diego.

Although the bout has not been announced by Strikeforce, MMA Weekly is reporting that verbal agreements are in place for the fight.

Brunson had been scheduled to fight Souza in March, however, the former Division II All American wrestler was forced to withdraw because he did not pass the Ohio Commission’s vision requirements. The fighter has reportedly undergone LASIK surgery since and is no longer required to wear contact lenses.

Souza (15-3) fought replacement Bristol Marunde on March 3rd and tapped out the middleweight with a third round, arm-triangle-choke. The win returned the renowned grappler to the winner’s column, after Souza lost by unanimous decision to current middleweight champion Luke Rockhold last September.

Brunson (9-1) is coming off a split decision loss to UFC vet Kendall Grove at ShoFight 20 earlier this month, which was the Jackson MMA fighter’s first professional loss. Since arriving in Strikeforce Brunson has scored wins over Jeremy Hamilton, Lumumba Sayers and Nate James.

A bantamweight bout between champion Ronda Rousey and former champion Sarah Kaufman is expected to headline the upcoming August 18th card, which will be hosted by San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center.
