Report: UFC Attempting to Acquire Eddie Alvarez, Bout With Donald Cerrone Targeted

Alvarez

Although there’s been extensive talk about who Eddie Alvarez will fight next, few were predicting the Bellator Lightweight Champion’s next opponent might be UFC contender, Donald Cerrone.

Alvarez was expected to face Michael Chandler or Bellator interim champ Will Brooks, but according to a report from Sherdog.com, the UFC is attempting to acquire the lightweight once again. The report says that the promotion is hoping to book Alvarez-Cerrone for UFC 178 on September 27th, if it can come to a deal with Bellator.

The UFC attempted to sign Alvarez once before, but Bellator countered the offer and a legal battle ensued between the promotion and the fighter. Alvarez ultimately returned to Bellator, however, and proceeded to defeat Chandler last November.

The 30 year-old reportedly has one more bout on his Bellator deal, and was scheduled to fight Chandler for a third time in May, but withdrew due to a concussion.

Neither the UFC, Bellator or Alvarez has made any official comment regarding the report.
