Report: Vitor Belfort-Chael Sonnen to Take Place at 185

Chael Sonnen

By FCF Staff

Earlier this week Chael Sonnen relayed on “UFC Tonight” that his planned bout with Vitor Belfort will take place at light-heavyweight. According to new comments from UFC President Dana White, however, the July 5th fight will be contested at 185.

The UFC is hoping to book Belfort-Sonnen for UFC 175, as a result of Wanderlei Silva’s licensing issues in Nevada. While speaking to Fighters Only Magazine recently, White relayed that the planned bout will be fought at middleweight.

The ZUFFA exec also confirmed that Belfort would likely lock up a title shot provided he defeats Sonnen. White stopped short, however, of saying Sonnen would secure another title shot provided he wins.

Belfort was initially scheduled to face middleweight champ Chris Weidman at UFC 173, but after testosterone-replacement-therapy was banned by the Nevada commission, “The Phenom” withdrew.

Having ended his TRT regiment, Belfort will be applying for a license in Nevada, so that he can face Sonnen at UFC 175.

Belfort scored stoppage wins over Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson in 2013, and is currently ranked #2 in the UFC middleweight division.

Sonnen is looking to rebound from a TKO loss to Rashad Evans in November, after he submitted “Shogun” Rua last August.
