Report: Vitor Belfort Targeting Chael Sonnen, But “American Gangster” Adds Condition
By FCF Staff
Chael Sonnen announced recently that after he battles “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17th, he intends to return to middleweight, and is hoping to fight Vitor Belfort or Wanderlei Silva. Although Belfort has reportedly relayed he’s interested in fighting Sonnen now as well, there’s a significant roadblock to the bout.
Belfort’s wife and manager Joana Prado recently informed the UFC that her client isn’t interested in fighting anyone at 185 pounds, unless it’s for the championship. Belfort will, however, compete at light-heavyweight while he waits for a fight with either Anderson Silva or Chris Weidman, who will rematch on December 28th. As a result, a proposed bout with Tim Kennedy appears to off the table.
Now, in the latest edition of “UFC Tonight” it was announced that Belfort wants to fight Sonnen, and the latter responded to the news by stating:
“Vitor, I accept. However, he has a title of number-one contender. If he’s willing to put that on line, not only will I fight him, but I’ll do it on December 28. Weidman defends his title, Rousey defends her title, and Vitor, you have a title and I want you to defend it against me.”
Of course, as it stands now, it’s highly unlikely Belfort will agree to fight Sonnen at 185, which could spoil his title shot plans.
