Report: Wanderlei Silva Admits to Taking Banned Substance, Chael Sonnen Temporarily Suspended

In the wake of the cancellation of their UFC 175 bout, and each man’s respective issues with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, both Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva were addressed by the organization on Tuesday.

According to multiple reports, Sonnen has been temporarily by the NSAC, after testing positive for anastrozole and clomiphene recently.

Sonnen argued afterwards that neither substance is a performance enhancing drug, and was used as a means to help his transition away from testosterone-replacement-therapy. The charismatic star has since announced he is retiring.

A hearing for Sonnen will be set by the NSAC in the near future.

Silva, meanwhile, was pulled from UFC 175 after failing to submit a random drug test and apply for a license in the state. As a result, Vitor Belfort was booked to fight Sonnen, before the latter failed his random test.

Silva reportedly admitted to the NSAC on Tuesday that he took a diuretic recently, in an effort to rehabilitate a wrist injury he incurred during his brawl with Sonnen on TUF Brazil. The use of diuretics is typically prohibited by athletic commissions.

Silva’s lawyer apologized to the commission on behalf of Silva, but the organization is going to review the fighter’s case to determine if a complaint, and disciplinary action, will be carried out.
