Robbie Lawler Comments on Nick Diaz Waving Off Fight: “It Was a Lot of Damage”
By FCF Staff
It looks like some fans and observers were surprised to see Nick Diaz wave off his bout Saturday with UFC 266. But, it doesn’t sound like Robbie Lawler was shocked by what transpired.
Diaz returned to the Octagon for the first time since 2015 on Saturday, and ending up retiring in the third round. The Stockton star peppered Lawler with punches in the fight’s early going. But, Lawler continued to pressure Diaz and landed hard shots of his own.
After Lawler (29-15) sent Diaz (26-10) to the mat with a thumping punch in round three, the latter waved off the fight. While talking about how the fight concluded afterward, Lawler referenced the damage Diaz incurred (quotes via MMA Junkie).
“I felt like it was an accumulation,” Lawler said. “But I felt like I caught him with a little check hook and then a little left after that then when he went down a hit him with a little uppercut. Then when he went down he wanted him to come down with him and I was like, ‘Let’s continue the fun stuff.’
“He’s a warrior. He was standing right there in the pocket. I throw hard shots and he was taking them. It was a lot of damage. When you go back and watch the fight it was a war. A three-round war. I hit pretty hard and it just wasn’t his night.”
The victory avenged Lawler’s 2014, KO loss to Diaz and snapped a four-fight losing streak for the former welterweight champ.
