Hughes Slams, Punches Way
to Extreme Challenge Win

OREM, Utah — Matt Hughes avoided an early submission attempt by Steve Gomm and picked up the pace in the second round en route to a TKO victory in the main event of Extreme Challenge 43.
Hughes, now 29-3, had to fight off a guillotine choke after lifting Gomm into the air early in their bout… he slowly freed himself over a 30-second period, then slammed Gomm to the floor.
Gomm, who owns a win over Chris Brennan and went the distance with Sean Sherk, fared well in the opening round before Hughes took over in the second. A huge slam started the round and Hughes dominated position and landed several big punches before referee Lonnie Foster halted the fight at 3:18 of Round 2.
In a feature bout, Jason Medina fought out of a tight triangle by Justin Ellison and scored a TKO win when Ellison tapped from strikes at 4:04 of Round 1. Medina improved to 6-1.
Phil Henderson, formerly of the Lion’s Den in Tulsa, picked up his first victory when Rick garvesen tapped from a guillotine choke at 2:43 of the first round. Henderson landed some big knees and Gravesen handed out some good punches in the early stages of the bout.
Randy Couture prospect Nathan Quarry won his debut over Pat Miletich-trained Andrew McFedries when McFedries verbally submitted from exhaustion at 3:03 of the second round. The two were undefeated in amateur competition and show much promise in the pros.
Three Utah fighters scored victories… David Bancroft, Dave Phillips and Kevin Ascarte… although Ascarte is from San Diego, he is training in Utah.
Chad Davis of Los Angeles notched his first victory by outlasting a game Jason Gyllenskog over 15 minutes to win a unanimous decision.

Here are the official results…

  • David Bancroft def. Matt Phillips, 2:44 Rd. 1 by triangle.
  • Chad Davis def. Jason Gyllenskog, 15:00 Unanimous decision.
  • Dave Phillips def. Justin Sessions, 2:40 Rd. 1 by armbar.
  • Kevin Ascarte def. Tex Virnig, 1:47 Rd. 1 by KO (forearm strike).
  • Nathan Quarry def. Andrew McFedries, 3:03 Rd. 2 (8:03) by verbal submission.
  • Phil Henderson def. Rick Gravesen, 2:43 Rd. 1, guillotine.
  • Jason Medina def. Justin Ellison, 4:04 Rd. 1, tap from strikes.
  • Matt Hughes def. Steve Gomm, 3:18 Rd. 2 (8:18) by ref stoppage.

The Griffen Reynaud-Travis Fulton fight was dropped when Reynaud suffered a cut and Fulton failed to get his HIV test.
