Spike TV/UFC Update: Spike Exec Responds To Report That The Network “Has Given Up” On UFC
By Joshua Molina
Spike TV spokesman David Schwarz had no comment regarding the recently published report that Spike is ready to cut ties with UFC, after a decline of the MMA company’s decline in television ratings.
MMA Fighting on July 1 published a report suggesting that Spike has placed UFC shows in low-watched, late night timeslots, and even counter-programmed the live Versus telecast of UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry on June 26.
Schwarz’s only statement regarding the MMA Fighting report was “There’s always speculation during contract negotiations.”
The marriage between Spike and UFC appears to be crumbling. UFC is rumored to be talking about purchasing an ownership stake in the G4 network and Spike, as a result of a UFC depature, could bring Bellator Fighting Championships to its cable network from MTV2, Bellator’s current TV partner. Full Contact Fighter examined these possibilities in detail yesterday.
