Strikeforce Competitors to be Compensated in Wake of Cancelled Event

It appears as though the fighters who have spent weeks training hard for a scheduled, and now cancelled, Strikeforce event in Sacramento, will be compensated for their time. The doomed card’s competitors were informed earlier in the week that the September 29th event would not take place, after Showtime elected not to broadcast the event, following an injury to headliner Gilbert Melendez.

Full Contact Fighter has confirmed with the camp of Pat Healy, Melendez’s scheduled opponent, that the lightweight contender will receive some compensation. The camp of Caros Fodor, who was scheduled to fight Josh Thomson, also relayed that they believe compensation is coming.

FCF also confirmed with Authentic Sports Management publicist Jen Wenk that clients Jorge Santiago and Yuri Villefort were going to be compensated.

None of the above, however, would disclose the amount or whether the sum will be the contracted “show money.”

Zuffa, the parent company of Strikeforce, was not contractually obligated to compensate the fighters as a result of the cancellation, as it took place several days prior to fight date.

MMA Junkie is also reporting that sources tied to many of the scheduled fighters will be compensated.

It remains to be seen whether any of the cancelled bouts or scheduled competitors will be rebooked for the promotion’s upcoming November 3rd card in Oklahoma City.
