Tom Aspinall Will Continue to Keep His Jiu-Jitsu in “Back Pocket”
By FCF Staff
Tom Aspinall’s striking abilities have drawn considerable praise as the heavyweight has risen the ranks. But, following his submission win over Andrei Arlovski at UFC Vegas 19, the British fighter reminded people he’s been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years.
Aspinall appeared to stun Arlovski in the opening round with punches. In round two, however, the prospect took the former champ down and quickly submitted him with a rear-naked-choke.
Following the impressive win, Aspinall had this to say about his ground game (quotes via MMA Junkie).
“I’ve been doing jiu-jitsu a long time,” Aspinall said. “My dad, he’s one of the first black belts in the U.K. I’ve been in and out of jiu-jitsu basically all my life. I’ve got some jiu-jitsu, just not a lot of people know about it. I’ll just keep in the back pocket for when I need it, I think. Just like I did tonight. No one expected that. Not even me. It was just instinctive when I got him to the mat. (I’d) take the back and choke.”
Saturday’s win extended Aspinall’s winning streak to six and his overall record to 10-2. Arlovski saw his record fall to 30-20.
