Tim Means may have had his four fight winning streak snapped by Matt Brown this past July, but the welterweight’s coach believes there were positives to draw on from the defeat.

Means agreed to fight Brown at UFC 189 on July 11th, after the latter had a planned bout with Nate Diaz fall through. Means was coming off consecutive, stoppage wins over George Sullivan and Dhiego Lima heading into the bout.

As everyone and their dog had predicted, the fight delivered plenty of fireworks, despite the fact it didn’t enter the second round. Means had Brown in trouble early on, but the top ranked contender rallied back, and caught “The Dirty Bird” with a fight ending choke.

Recently Mean’s head coach coach, Tom Vaughn, appeared on Full Contact Fighter Radio, and the FIT NHB leader had this to say about the bout:

“Yeah, it always sucks to lose, but I think it kind of ended up being positive,” said Vaughn. “He got a lot of good response. The fight was well received. The UFC wasn’t disappointed. I mean he went out there and he went after him that round.”

“That’s what people want to see,” added Vaughn, before referring to Mean’s next fight, which will take place on December 10th. “The things that didn’t go right we can fix. So, I like this next fight. John Howard’s a tough guy, but I believe we’re going to beat him.”

Means remains on the outside of the top 15 rankings as a result of his loss to Brown, but if he defeats Howard, 2015 will have been a big year for the New Mexico fighter.

“I thought Tim was doing well until he didn’t,” said Vaughn, when asked for his assessment of Mean’s loss to Brown. “The higher you go, the less mistakes you can make, and he kind of, made an error. He had a sloppy shot, and got caught in a quick guillotine, but I thought he looked pretty good up until that point.”

The December 10th, Fight Night card will take place at the Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
