Louis Neglia is no stranger to successful promoting, with over 100 kickboxing and 15 recent mixed promotions bringing the action of kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA to Long Island. Hoping to build on these extremely popular "Vengeance at the Vanderbilt" shows, Neglia kicked off his newest endeavor at the Mohegan Sun Arena last night. But this former world kickboxing champion’s latest foray into martial arts promotion was less than spectacular. With a disappointing crowd turnout, Ring of Combat’s maiden voyage was a lonely one.

Marred by the eternal curse of last minute injuries, illness, and fighter mishaps — the card of MMA, kickboxing, and Muay Thai fare undoubtedly suffered. Losing one main event fight (Tim Lane versus Erik Marshall for the ISKA Championship was called off scant hours before the event when Marshall was found to have an upper respiratory infection during the required pre-fight medical exam), the night was generally not an example of stellar MMA action and was only punctuated by two clear mismatches in Muay Thai action (reportedly due to loss of opponents that had to be replaced at the last minute). With many of the match-ups not making it past the first round (or a couple of minutes in the case of single round time-limited bouts), the entire show lasted a little over two hours.

For the East Coast MMA Championship, Renzo Gracie’s Steve Anshelwitz was victorious over Pitts Penn’s Jose Rodriguez in a validly controversial referee stoppage. Of the six mixed martial arts bouts offered last night, Gracie-trained Nardu Debra’s victory in his battle with newcomer standout Danny Suarez, of Combined Martial Arts, was the night’s high point.
