UFC 170: Daniel Cormier Believes Punching Power at 205 Was Key in Taking Out Pat Cummins

Daniel Cormier may not have faced a top five ranked fighter in his light-heavyweight debut, like he was supposed to, but he still left fans buzzing with a quick win last night at UFC 170.

Cormier needed just over one minute to put away highly touted, UFC newcomer Pat Cummins, and the former heavyweight believes an increase in punching power was the key.

“It’s the first time for a finish for me in the UFC. I feel great,” Cormier told FOX Sports 1 after the bout. “I feel like my power affected him more than the bigger guys. I hit Josh Barnett and Frank Mir with those punches and it didn’t affect them like that.”

Cormier begged the UFC to find him a fight, following Evans’ withdrawal due to a knee injury, and after UFC 170 it’s clear he wants to fight again sooner than later.

“I’m waiting for the call,” said Cormier. “If Glover gets hurt, I’ll fight for the championship. If Phil Davis gets hurt, I’ll fight Anthony Johnson.”

Although a win over the #3 ranked Evans would have done more for Cormier’s pursuit of champion Jon Jones, its hard to deny that “DC” didn’t send a warning signal to other light-heavyweights Saturday night.

“Cormier needed to send a message to everyone at 205 that he’s a legit contender and he did that tonight,” noted FOX Sports 1 commentator Kenny Florian.

“Cormier looked great out there,” added Phil Davis. “It was everything you expected from a veteran guy. DC was a better wrestler. He took away Cummin’s wrestling.”

With the victory, the 34 year-old Cormier moved his pro record to 14-0. The defeat was Cummins first in five pro fights.

UFC 170 was hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
