While Chris Weidman is the favourite heading into UFC 175 this weekend, the consensus opinion seems to be that his best chance for victory, is through taking Lyoto Machida to the mat.  The reason being, of course, that Machida remains one of the sport’s most elusive and dangerous strikers.

Although Weidman has continued to demonstrate evolving stand-up skills, the All-American wrestler’s greatest weapon is his punishing top game. In the latest edition of “UFC Tonight”, here is what Machida had to say about the middleweight champion, and the keys to victory (quote via FOX Sports):

“He’s a complete fighter. Every time I fight a wrestler, I feel very comfortable because I can keep my distance,” the noted striker said. “It’s for sure he’s going to grab me, but I’ll be prepared for the defense and I’m prepared to go to the ground.”

“I have a good result against undefeated fighters. Rashad was undefeated and Thiago Silva was undefeated. I can do my best. I can’t say my strategy for the fight.”

Machida has scored a knockout win over Mark Munoz, and a decision victory over Gegard Mousasi since moving to 185. The former light-heavyweight champ also holds wins over noted wrestlers like the aforementioned Rashad Evans, Dan Henderson, Randy Couture and Ryan Bader.

UFC 175 will be hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
