UFC 178: Eddie Alvarez Heading to Octagon, Fighting Donald Cerrone in Debut

Alvarez

Only hours after Bellator announced that it has granted Eddie Alvarez his unconditional release, the UFC has confirmed the lightweight star has signed with the promotion. In the former Bellator champ’s Octagon debut, he will take on Donald Cerrone at UFC 178, September 27th.

The announcement comes approximately two weeks after reports surfaced that the UFC was attempting to acquire Alvarez once again, and that further, a bout with Cerrone was being targeted.

No details regarding Alvarez’s UFC deal were disclosed.

Alvarez (25-3) will be fighting for the first time since last November, when he earned a split decision win over Michael Chandler, and reclaimed the Bellator title.

Cerrone (24-6), on the other hand, has had a busy 2014 campaign and is coming off a stoppage win over Jim Miller in July. The bout with Alvarez will be the contender’s fourth of the year.

Bobby Green was booked to fight Cerrone on September 27th, and as a result of the change, the UFC is searching for a new opponent.

UFC 178 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena, and will feature flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson taking on Chris Cariaso.
