Jose Aldo went on to defend his featherweight crown last night at UFC 179, in one of the best fights the year has offered, but the memorable war did include some controversy.

The champion and Mendes were exchanging during the final seconds of round one, but Aldo landed two, hard shots right after the bell, which sent Mendes to the ground.

After the fight, Aldo had this to say about the late shots to FOX Sports:

“I was waiting for the ref to stop the round. I could not hear it.”

UFC President Dana White was also asked about the blows, and he relayed:”

“You couldn’t hear the bell go off here. It was so loud in the arena. I didn’t hear it, White said to FOX Sports. “My phone was blowing up afterward saying it was a cheap shot, but you couldn’t hear the bell.”

Aldo went on to earn a unanimous decision victory over Mendes, and in doing so, the renowned fighter extended his winning streak to 18.

UFC 179 was hosted by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
