Jose Aldo outscored Chad Mendes for the unanimous decision win at UFC 179, and retained his featherweight title, but the Brazilian star took some incredible punishment while doing so.

Aldo’s left eye was badly cut and bruised by the end of Saturday’s scrap, which is widely being called one of the best title fights in the promotion’s history. After the bout, the champion’s striking coach, UFC vet Pedro Rizzo, posted the following picture on Instagram:

With the victory, Aldo improved his record to 25-1, while Mendes saw his fall to 16-2 (his only other loss was via KO to Aldo in 2012).
