UFC 191: Demetrious Johnson Responds to Critics- “My Last Five Fights Speak For Themselves”

Demetrious Johnson

By FCF Staff

Demetrious Johnson has defended the UFC’s flyweight title six times, and is widely considered to be one of the most complete fighters on the planet, but “Mighty Mouse” can’t shake the criticism that he doesn’t provide exciting fights.

The 29 year-old champ is scheduled to fight John Dodson at UFC 194 on Saturday, in what will be the second time they’ve fought, as Johnson decisioned the latter in 2013. Since then, Johnson has gone on to win five more fights, and has scored finishes in four of them.

In advance of his latest title defense, Johnson appeared on “UFC Tonight“, and he was asked once again about the criticism that he’s not an exciting fighter (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release).

“My last five title defenses speak for themselves. I knocked out Joseph Benavidez, who had never been finished. I submitted Kyoji Horiguchi, who’s never been finished. I finished John Moraga, who had never been finished. I’m the champion and I’m getting better all around.”

Dodson (17-6) has also been a vocal critic of Johnson, and has argued that champion doesn’t promote the flyweight division effectively. When asked about Dodson’s criticisms, Johnson (22-2-1) relayed:

“If this guy was at a bar, would I get a beer with him? Absolutely not. Why do I have more Twitter followers and Instagram followers than he does? He brought a lot of fire power to the first fight, but it wasn’t enough. We’ll see what he brings on Saturday night.”

The challenger, meanwhile, has stopped Darrell Montague and John Moraga, and decisioned Zach Makovsky since he was defeated by Johnson.

UFC 191 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In the co-headliner, Frank Mir will take on fellow former heavyweight champ, Andrei Arlovski.
