Amanda Nunes scored a dominant, stoppage win over Raquel Pennington last night at UFC 224. But today, many people are discussing the fact that Pennington’s corner encouraged her to continue fighting, after she called for the bout to be over.

Nunes bested Pennington in many of the headliner’s exchanges, and in round four, she appeared to break the challenger’s nose with a knee. After the fourth round, it sounded like Pennington told her cornermen she was “done”, but they encouraged to keep fighting, and that she could “recover” later. Nunes proceeded to punish Pennington with more punches in round five, and the fight was stopped by the referee.

Following the impressive win, Nunes had this to say about Pennington’s corner (quote via MMA Fighting):

“Everyone must be saying a lot of bad things about them on social media, but I think she really needs to surround herself with people that want the best for her, so she can evolve in her next fights. Unfortunately, tonight he failed.”

“It’s sad, because you could avoid something,” Nunes added. “She went to the hospital. It might be a bad injury for her to go to the hospital. I already asked Nina to text her to find out if she needs anything, I’m here. And it’s sad. If she didn’t have the right conditioning to fight, then the coach should have thrown in the towel, for sure. I think my coach wouldn’t let me go through that.”

The victory was Nunes’ third title defense as bantamweight champion.
