UFC 226: Daniel Cormier Fires Back at “Idiots” Who Say Brock Lesnar Incident Was Staged

Daniel Cormier’s historic win at UFC 226 was followed by an in-cage confrontation with pro-wrestling star, Brock Lesnar, but the new heavyweight champ insists the incident wasn’t staged.

Cormier became only the second person in UFC history to hold two titles at once last night, by knocking out Stipe Miocic in the opening round. After the win, Cormier called Lesnar into the Octagon, who was cage side for the main event. The latter proceeded to push Cormier back, before Lesnar engaged in a pro-wrestling like bit, on the mic.

Not surprisingly, Cormier was asked at the post-fight press conference to respond to his fellow fighters, who called the incident staged. The light-heavyweight and heavyweight champ said this (quote via MMA Fighting):

“‘Staged, they’re idiots’ — fine,” Cormier said. “Stay broke. You’ve got a guy like Brock Lesnar in front of you and you don’t go crazy on him? Are you crazy? Brock is a pro wrestler, he does fake fighting. So I will do fake fighting with you until I put my fist upside your face. I’ll do fake fighting with you, Brock. And then I’ll punch you upside your head.

“So yeah, yeah. You guys call it fake online. I see a bunch of fighters. ‘Oh, it’s so fake, I don’t want to watch this.’ Tune in and keep lacing my pockets. You’ve guys gotta get on board. These guys get on the microphone after their fights and say, ‘Yeah, it’s whatever the UFC decides.’ OK.”

Lesnar, who has no official wins since 2010 and was suspended in 2017 for testing positive for banned substances, is expected to fight Cormier in roughly six months time.
