Shortly before Stipe Miocic halted the meteoric rise of Francis Ngannou, the heavyweight champ says the UFC approached him about fighting Daniel Cormier this summer.

Miocic battle Ngannou at UFC 220 in January, and proceeded to defeat the feared slugger by decision. Not long after, the promotion announced that Miocic would fight Cormier this Saturday at UFC 226.

Recently the Ohio fighter attended a media luncheon, and while doing so, Miocic reported the UFC asked him about fighting Cormier, just two days before UFC 220 (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I told them, ‘shut up,’” Miocic said, when asked for his reaction.  “I got more things to worry about.”

“It had nothing to do with Cormier,” Miocic added. “Dude, leave me alone — I’m fighting in two days. You’re talking about how I’m gonna get hit by the Ford Escort power and you’re gonna come at me with this?”

Cormier also competed at UFC 220, and the light-heavyweight champion stopped Volkan Oezdemir.

UFC 226 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
