UFC 229: Conor McGregor Reports he Was More “Excited” to Fight Khabib Nurmagomedov Than Tony Ferguson
By FCF Staff
It remains to be seen if Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor ever cross paths in the cage, but recently the latter admitted he’s more “excited” to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov, than “El Cucuy”.
After Ferguson won the interim lightweight title last October, by defeating Kevin Lee, it looked like he would be next for McGregor. But, following McGregor’s massive boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather last August, he elected to take more time off. Nurmagomedov went on to win the lightweight title this past April, by defeating Al Iaquinta, after Ferguson was sidelined with a knee injury.
Well, tomorrow, McGregor will challenge Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. During a recent interview with the UFC’s Megan Olivi, the superstar had this to say about Ferguson and Khabib (quote via UFC.com):
“I was excited about competing against him (Nurmagomedov), more so than Tony,” said McGregor. “I know Tony had an interim title also, but I was a lot more excited about this contest with an unbeaten fighter. I’m not really impressed that much by his record. It’s a pretty looking record, but if you dig deep, it’s not that pretty. I think it’s very deceiving. Everyone seems to put him on a pedestal, and I don’t see it. He’s a bit timid when it comes to taking a shot; he does not like to take a smack. And if you don’t like to take a smack when you fight me, you’re in for a long, long night.”
