Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje will fight for an interim lightweight title at UFC 249 this Saturday, but according to “El Cucuy”, he’s already holding the “real” belt.

Ferguson was originally scheduled to face the champion Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 18th. But, due to the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions in place to battle the virus, the card never took place.

Since Nurmagomedov is stranded in Russia and is now observing Ramadan, Ferguson and Gaethje are fighting for an interim belt.

But, during a recent media call to promote Saturday’s card, Ferguson offered this take on the situation (quote via MMA Junkie).

“(Expletive) Khabib,” Ferguson said. “I’m defending my belt for the third time. This is for the real belt, this is not for an interim title. This is for the real championship (expletive). It’s champ (expletive) only, buddy.”

Ferguson won an interim title in 2017 by submitting Kevin Lee. In April, 2018, he was booked to fight Nurmagomedov for the world title, but was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury.

Since then, the 36-year-old has defeated Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone.
