Frankie Edgar has been planning to make a move to the bantamweight division. But, it looks like the star would put those plans on hold, if the opportunity arises to fight the UFC’s new featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski.

Edgar is booked to face rising bantamweight Cory Sandhagen on January 25th. But when Brian Ortega recently withdrew from a fight this Saturday with Chan Sung Jung due to injury, Edgar stepped in.

Recently Edgar spoke with Rank5, and he was asked about the possibility of securing a bout with Volkanovski, if he beats Jung. The former lightweight champ said this (quote via MMA Junkie):

“I would absolutely take a fight against Volkanovski,” Edgar said. “I’m in it to fight the best guys; that’s why I’m fighting Chan. I came into this sport to be a champion, and if it’s not at ’45 or ’35 or ’55, then what am I doing?”

In addition, while discussing his upcoming fight with “The Korean Zombie”, the 38-year-old Edgar said this:

“You know, I think what makes it intriguing is fighting ‘Korean Zombie’ here in his home country, the style he brings, I mean they call him the ‘Zombie’ for a reason,” Edgar said. “He takes a beating, keeps coming – you can’t really put him away. He fights with a ton of heart, and I consider myself a guy that fights that way as well.”

Edgar (23-7-1) is coming off a decision loss to now former 145 champ, Max Holloway in July.
