After competing under the UFC’s banner for nearly 15 years, Thiago Alves is reporting that he plans to test free agency.

Alves, who made his UFC debut back in 2005, is scheduled to fight Tim Means this Saturday at UFC DC. The bout is the last of the 36-year-old welterweight’s current deal, and recently Alves confirmed he plans to test the free agent waters (quote via MMA Junkie):

“I want to see what the free market says,” Alves said. “I want to see what the UFC offers me. I want to see what other organizations offer me and then see what’s the best option.”

“I’ve always just re-signed with the UFC. I’ve been with the company for over 14 years. This has been home forever. Let’s see how it goes after this.

“I’m actually a little excited to see what’s out there. It’s new to me. Anything new at this point in my career and my life is very exciting.”

The former title challenger is coming off a decision loss to Laureano Staropoli in May, which dropped Alves’ record to 23-14. The veteran fighter, who has battled extensive injuries during his career, is 2-3 in his last 5 fights.
