“Jacare” Souza may have gone to the judge’s scorecards for the first time in seven bouts, last night at UFC FN 36, but the middleweight says an arm injury isn’t why.

Despite a determined effort from Francis Carmont, Souza managed to work his way to a unanimous decision win Saturday night, and record his sixth straight win. After the bout, the highly regarded fighter revealed he has bone fragments in his left arm, and will have to undergo surgery before fighting again.

“I had no difficulty because of the injury,” Souza relayed afterwards. “I mentioned that I had a lot of [bone] fragments in my left arm, and some people said that I shouldn’t fight. I asked the UFC to trust me; I asked my physicians if I could fight, and they told me that I had a good chance of fighting, so that’s what I believed in.”

As a result of the arthroscopic surgery he’ll undergo, “Jacare” expects to be sidelined for around six weeks.

Souza is currently ranked #3 in the UFC’s middleweight division.
