UFC FN 68: Ben Rothwell “Can’t Put a Price Tag” on What He’s Gained Through Running His Own Gym

Heading into UFC Fight Night 68 tomorrow night, Ben Rothwell has some notable momentum behind him, and the heavyweight credits much of that to what he’s received from owning his own gym.

Rothwell has been booked to fight fellow contender Matt Mitrione at the event, following memorable, stoppage wins over Brandon Vera and Alistair Overeem. Recently the 33 year-old spoke to UFC.com about his recent success, and Rothwell pointed to what he’s gained by teaching at his Kenosha gym.

“During all my down time, the younger Ben, I’d get a big win and like other guys, I’d take my three months off doing nothing and staying out of the gym,” he said. “It’s not possible when you own a gym with your name on it. People expect to see you, and during my down time, the Monday after my fight, I’m in there teaching my class. And it keeps me in the gym. I have a commitment to everyone and, honestly, I’ve watched myself blossom into the martial artist that I am now, and it’s because of the teaching. I teach five days a week and it’s changed me completely. I can’t put a price tag on what I’ve gained in the last three years teaching….”

Rothwell (34-9) proceeded to say the students he has at his facility are like “family”, and added that seeing what they’ve gained through training, is extremely motivating.

Mitrione (9-3), meanwhile, is riding a three fight winning streak and is coming off a stoppage win over Gabriel Gonzaga. Mitrione is ranked #13 in the UF’s heavyweight division and Rothwell is currently positioned  at #9.

UFC FN 68 will be hosted by the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
