Stephen Thompson doesn’t currently sit in the top five welterweight ranks, but “Wonderboy” believes finishing Johny Hendricks tonight at UFC FN 82, will propel him right into title contention.

The welterweights will meet in the headliner for today’s card, which will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. In Hendricks, Thompson is taking on a former champion, who is currently ranked #2.

Recently the highlight reel striker appeared on “UFC Tonight“, and when asked if he’s hoping to secure a title shot at UFC FN 82, Thompson stated (quote via FOX Sports press release):

“That’s the plan. Finishing out Johny Hendricks should put me in contention. That’s the goal. It’s exciting for me to show fans and the UFC I’m ready for the next level in competition.”

The 32 year-old Thompson is riding a five fight winning streak and the welterweight KO’d Jake Ellenberger in his last outing.
