In advance of Gunnar Nelson’s bout next month with Leon Edwards at UFC London, the welterweight contender has provided some interesting reflections on his pivotal and gory win over Alex Oliveira.

Nelson took on Oliveira at UFC 231 last month. After taking some heavy elbows from Oliveira early on, Nelson came back and opened up a massive cut on Oliveira with an elbow of his own in round two. Shortly after, Nelson sunk in a fight-ending rear-naked-choke. The win returned Nelson to the win column, following his knockout loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio in 2017.

Recently Nelson was a guest on the Eurobash podcast, and here is some of what the Icelandic fighter had to say about the key victory (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I was definitely really happy with this win especially because it was a heavy start considering that my last fight before this one,” said Nelson. “I felt like this guy [Oliveira] cheated a little bit too, he elbowed me a couple of times and grabbed the fence a little bit, so it was great to get passed all of that and get the win.”

“…He was done then [after the elbow],” he said. “The choke didn’t really do much, it was barely on when he tapped. He tapped twice. As I was grabbing it, I don’t think the referee saw that, and then I squeezed and he tapped again, but he was done.”

The Edwards – Nelson fight will co-headline the March 16th, UFC London card, which will be hosted by the O2 Arena.
