UFC Nashville: Stephen Thompson’s Still Targeting Fight With Robbie Lawler

By FCF Staff

Stephen Thompson has campaigned for a fight with Robbie Lawler in the past, and as he gets set to face Anthony Pettis tonight, “Wonderboy’s” still hoping to land a bout with “Ruthless”.

Thompson will meet Pettis in the main event of UFC Nashville, and the bout will mark the first time he’s fought since May, 2018, when he lost to Darren Till. While talking to the media recently about his future, Thompson had this to say about Lawler (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Lawler is definitely the fight I’ve been wanting for a while,” Thompson said. “I’ve been a big fan of him and he’s been such a monster in the welterweight division. I thought he looked great in his last fight with Ben (Askren). He looked really strong and just really focused. I think that year off gave him some time to heal up and get his mind right. I think that would be awesome.

“I know there’s a card happening in Greenville, S.C., my hometown, three months from now. Hopefully come out of this fight unscathed and we’ll make that fight happen.”

Lawler battled Askren at UFC 235 earlier this month and lost via technical submission. Lawler vehemently denied, however, that he had gone unconscious from the choke Askren was applying.
