UFC Newark: Dana White Says Win Will Deliver Colby Covington a Title Shot
By FCF Staff
Due to Jorge Masvidal’s emphatic, KO win over Ben Askren at UFC 239, the consensus has been that “Gamebred” is currently the front runner for a shot at the welterweight title. But, recently Dana White reported that if Colby Covington defeats Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark, “Chaos” will be next for champion Kamaru Usman.
Masvidal knocked Askren out in record fashion earlier this month, by finishing the previously undefeated fighter with a knee and punches in just 5 seconds. As a result, the theory’s been floated that Covington will need to score a decisive win himself, in order to secure a title shot.
But, when White was asked to comment on the situation following UFC 240, he said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“Covington is next in line, and he stepped up, he took this Lawler fight, and he’ll get the (title fight),” White said.
The 31-year-old Covington (14-1) has won six straight bouts and last summer, he secured the interim title by defeating Rafael dos Anjos. The noted wrestler was stripped of the belt, however, when he was unable to commit to fighting then champion Tyron Woodley in September.
