UFC Working On Frank Mir Vs. Cain Velasquez, Forrest Griffin Vs. Tito Ortiz III

By FCF Staff

A heavyweight matchup between former champions Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir and a third, “rubber match” between Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz is in the works, according to UFC owner Lorenzo Feritta, who revealed the information during a rare chat session with fans on Twitter.

Mir won the UFC’s heavyweight title in 2004 before a motorcycle accident forced him to vacate the belt, and won the interim title in 2008 after making a comeback.

Junior Dos Santos snatched the UFC heavyweight title away from Velasquez in the main event of the first UFC live event on FOX in November. The loss was the first of Velasquez’s career, after the former NCAA wrestling superstar and Team AKA member put together nine straight victories.

Ortiz, the former poster boy for the UFC and the promotion’s top superstar when the sport was acquired by Zuffa LLC in 2001, is entering his 15th year of competition in The Octagon since making his debut at 22 years of age at UFC 13 in 1997. His five defenses of the UFC’s light heavyweight title is a record number in the 205 pound weight class.

Of late, Ortiz, now 36 years old and mired by injuries, has struggled in the cage. His record is 1-6-1 in his last eight starts.
