Usman Nurmagomedov plans to pursue the UFC’s lightweight crown, just like his legendary cousin, Khabib. But, the current Bellator champ say he won’t do so until teammate Islam Makhachev has wrapped up his career.

The 26-year-old Nurmagomedov (18-0) joined Bellator back in 2021, and since then, he’s gone 7-0, with 1 no-contest. In a recent video on Gorilla Fighting’s YouTube channel, Nurmagomedov was asked about whether he intends to move to the UFC at some juncture. The Dagestani fighter confirmed he plans to, but not until Makhachev has retired (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).

“I’m waiting for Islam to finish his career and then I will [go after the UFC title],” Nurmagomedov said. “I think if we get it right, we’ll be fighting in the UFC at 28. I’m 26 years old right now. Two years, I’ll get stronger and that’s it. Go into the UFC at 28 and compete until I’m 32.”

Makhachev (26-1), who is 32 year’s old, has been competing professionally since 2010. The renowned fighter is expected to face Arman Tsarukyan in early 2025.

Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, has not been booked for his next fight yet. In September, he recorded a unanimous decision win over Alexandr Shabliy.
