White Takes Shot at Bellator’s Rebney After Alvarez Victory

Rebney Responds to UFC President

By FCF Staff

Eddie Alvarez made the most of his return to Bellator last night, following a long and at times ugly legal battle with the promotion, by narrowly defeating Michael Chandler . With the split decision win, Alvarez avenged a 2011 loss to the highly regarded lightweight and reclaimed the promotion’s belt.

After the event, UFC President Dana White took to Twitter to congratulate the fighter, who not too long ago, the UFC tried to sign. White also took the opportunity to take a verbal jab at his competitor, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney.

After the UFC extended a contract offer to Alvarez, which the fighter accepted, Bellator argued in court that they had matched the offer (as was their contractual right). Eventually Alvarez and Bellator elected to settle out of court and the fighter was booked to fight Chandler.

Rebney has referred to Chandler, who Bellator has signed to a long term contract, as the best lightweight in MMA.

Following the event, Rebney was asked to comment on White’s tweet, and the executive responded (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):

“You know what, I’ve kind of picked my spots where I thought it was necessary to respond,” said Rebney. “Some of his valuation comments were ridiculous given that his partner [FOX] paid us tens of millions of dollar for our rights in Latin America and some of the other things.”

“I don’t know what karma is,” Rebney said. “If karma is that we just put on the best mixed martial arts fight I’ve ever seen, that’s karma I’ll take big boatloads of.”

Bellator 106 was hosted by the Long Beach Convention Center.
