WSOF 8: Gaethje to Battle Cavalcante For Lightweight Title, Johnson-Kyle Re-Booked

By FCF Staff

Just days before World Series of Fighting will hold its latest event in Vancouver, British Columbia, the promotion has confirmed two feature fights for WSOF 8.

The event will take place January 18th in Hollywood, Florida, and will feature Justin Gaethje battling Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante for the lightweight title. In addition, the card will see Anthony Johnson fight light-heavyweight Mike Kyle, which was originally scheduled for December 7th, until the latter incurred a foot injury.

Gaethje (10-0) and Cavalcante (18-7-1) fought at WSOF 2 in March, however, “JZ” was cut badly early in the bout and the fight was awarded to the rising lightweight.

“This has been an incredible year for ‘World Series of Fighting,’ and we’re excited to announce that our first event of 2014 will feature another championship fight,” said Ray Sefo, World Series of Fighting president. “Justin and ‘JZ’ looked well on their way to putting on a fantastic fight in their first meeting before an early cut ended the fight. Justin wants to prove he was deserving of that win, while ‘JZ’ hopes to erase the frustration of the loss. The victor will prove his point and also walk away with our first-ever lightweight title.”

Since the aforementioned win, Gaethje has gone on to stop Brian Cobb and most recently Dan Lauzon.

“It feels like all of the hard work is paying-off by getting to showcase my skills on the headliner of one of the most respected new promotions in the MMA world,” Gaethje said. “That being said, I find it offensive that Gesias can find the courage to lock himself in a cage with me again. I’m pushing myself like never before, because come January 18th, I have one goal and that is to put Cavalcante to sleep.”

Cavalcante, meanwhile, stopped UFC veteran Tyson Griffin in the third round at WSOF 4 in August. It marked the only time the veteran has fought since facing Gaethje.

Johnson (15-4) will be competing for the first time since he earned a unanimous decision win over Andrei Arlosvki at WSOF 2. Kyle (20-10-1), on the other hand, fought Arlovski in September and lost by UD.

WSOF 8 will be hosted by the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and the main card will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.
